Good Bye Floppy Disk

Floppy Disk a data storage device is now considered as almost dead.Once it was very useful device to store data. Today, the only manufacturing company of Floppy Disk that is SONY said that they will stop production of Floppy Disk from next year. Due to wide spreading of internet & better options of Data storage capacity, Floppy disk lose its status.

What is Floppy Disk ?

A floppy disk is a data storage medium that is composed of a disk of thin, flexible ("floppy") magnetic storage medium encased in a square or rectangular plastic shell.Floppy disks are read and written by a floppy disk drive.Invented by the American information technology company IBM, floppy disks in 8 inch, 5¼ inch and 3½ inch forms enjoyed nearly three decades as a popular and ubiquitous form of data storage and exchange, from the mid-1970s to the late 1990s. While floppy disk drives still have some limited uses, especially with legacy industrial computer equipment, they have now been superseded by USB flash drives, external hard disk drives, CDs, DVDs, and memory cards.

How Floppy Disk Works ?
A floppy disk is an obsolete storage format that was used on personal computers. Each disk, typically 3.5 inches in height, held 1.44 megabytes of data.

Inside the hard plastic case of the floppy disk is a magnetic material used to store data. It is a similar material to the recording material in a cassette tape. When inserted into a drive, the magnetic tape (which is in the shape of a circle) is spun around rapidly, much like a CD.

While spinning, the read/write head of the disk stops at the empty track on the disk. The computer, before sending any information to the disk, quickly checks for things like system stability and whether or not the necessary space is free on the disk.

The write head of the disk sends data to the disk by magnetizing certain parts of the magnetic recording tape. This process is similar in theory to the way the magnetic strip on a credit card works. Once the data is on the floppy, an exact copy has been made--one is on the disk, one is on your computer. You can now take the floppy disk to any computer with a floppy drive and access your files

In 1971, Floppy disk came into existence. It was of 2 types, from which 3.5inch production stops last year & the production second one will be stop by SONY next year. SONY has sold 12mn Floppy disk.

In 2002, demand of floppy disk was 47mn in japan but Zip,CD,DVD,USB has vanish its existence.

It is really hard to believe that it is still in demand. Floppy disk is lucky to find its user in japan & india where it is still selling.
